Best Hats for Leather Patches: Richardson 112 vs 112FP vs 168 vs 115

Which caps take a leather patch best, why a structured front matters, and what to watch for on low-profile, unstructured and foam caps.

Quick answer

Structured trucker caps are the easiest hats to put a leather patch on, and the Richardson 112 is one of the most popular choices: a firm front that holds the patch flat, a mesh back and a snapback that fits most adults. If you don't want a seam behind the patch, use a 5-panel cap like the Richardson 112FP or a 7-panel cap like the Richardson 168. For a lower, trimmer look, use a low-profile cap like the Richardson 115 with a shorter patch.

What makes a hat good for a leather patch

  • A structured front. A stiffened front panel keeps its shape under the press and gives the patch a firm, even surface to bond to. Soft fronts can wrinkle under the patch.
  • A solid front panel. The patch should sit on the fabric front, not on mesh.
  • The seam layout. A 6-panel cap has a seam down the middle of the front. It works fine, but a one-piece or center-panel front gives a cleaner background.
  • Enough height. A mid-profile crown has room for a 2"–2.5" tall patch; a low-profile crown needs a shorter one. See the hat patch size guide.
  • A shape your press fits. Cap presses are built around the curve of a structured trucker front. The closer the cap is to that shape, the more even the pressure on the patch.
Cap Profile Front Why it works Watch out for
Richardson 112 Mid Structured, 6 panels, seam in the middle Firm front, huge color range, easy to find blank Center the patch exactly over the seam
Richardson 112FP Mid Structured, 5 panels, one-piece front The 112 shape with no seam behind the patch Check that it comes in the colors you need
Richardson 168 Mid 7 panels with a center front panel No seam down the middle of the patch Check how a wide patch sits across the panel seams
Richardson 115 Low Shorter crown (about 3" vs about 3.5" on the 112) A trimmer look that suits smaller patches Use a shorter patch; listings disagree on how stiff the front is, so check the spec sheet
Unstructured dad hats Low Soft front, no backing Relaxed, vintage look Support the front from inside when pressing; keep the patch smaller
Foam-front truckers Mid to high Foam front Retro look Foam can flatten under heat and pressure; test one cap first

Our picks by use

  • Selling to the widest audience: Richardson 112. Customers already know the fit.
  • The cleanest look behind a big logo: Richardson 112FP or 168.
  • Women's and youth orders, or a lower fit: a low-profile cap like the 115, with a 2.3" circle or a cattle tag patch.
  • Vintage and lifestyle brands: unstructured dad hats with a small patch, pressed carefully.

Pressing tips for each style

Structured truckers are what cap presses are designed for. Thick patches like leather and leatherette bond best with heat from inside the cap, which is why a dual-heat cap press helps. For times and temperatures, use the hat patch heat press chart.

On soft or low caps, slow down: pull the crown smooth over the lower platen, make sure the front isn't folded, and check the edges after pressing. On foam fronts, press one test cap and look for flattening before you run a batch.

FAQ

What is the best hat for leather patches?

A structured mid-profile trucker cap. The Richardson 112 is a common choice; the 112FP and 168 give you a front without a center seam.

Can you put a leather patch on a mesh front?

Put the patch on the solid fabric front panel. Mesh doesn't give the adhesive enough surface to bond to.

What's the difference between the Richardson 112 and 115?

The 115 is the low-profile version, with a shorter crown (about 3" vs about 3.5"). Choose a shorter patch for it.

What patch colors look best on these hats?

Match the patch to the cap's front color and pick the engraving color for contrast. Our leatherette sheets come in browns, blacks, greys, blues, camo and more.
