Leatherette Patch Color Guide: The Right Patch for Every Hat Color

Quick answer: pick the patch color for contrast with the cap's front, and the engraving color for contrast inside the patch. Browns (Light Brown, Saddle Tan, Vintage Caramel Brown) look good on almost every cap color. Gold or silver engraving (Rustic/Gold, Black/Gold, Black/Silver, Brushed Silver/Black) gives a dressier look on dark caps. On busy caps like camo, use a solid patch; on solid caps, a camo or carbon fiber patch becomes the focal point.

How leatherette colors work

Every leatherette color has two names: the face color and the color your engraving reveals. Light Brown/Black is a light brown patch with black engraving; Rustic/Gold is a rustic patch with gold engraving; Black/Silver is a black patch with silver engraving. So you're really choosing two contrasts: patch against cap, and logo against patch.

Patch colors by cap color

Cap front Patch colors that work Why
Black Light Brown/Black, Saddle Tan/Black, Vintage Caramel Brown/Black, Rustic/Gold, Brushed Silver/Black Warm browns and metallics stand out against black. A Black/Gold patch gives a subtle tone-on-tone look.
Heather grey or charcoal Dark Brown/Black, Light Brown/Black, Black/Silver, Vintage Black/Black Grey is neutral, so both light and dark patches read clearly.
White or white/black Dark Brown/Black, Vintage Coffee/Black, Black/Silver, Black/Gold Dark patches give the strongest contrast on white.
Khaki, coffee or tan Dark Brown/Black, Vintage Coffee/Black, Black/Gold, Rustic/Gold Go darker than the cap; a light brown patch disappears on khaki.
Navy Light Brown/Black, Saddle Tan/Black, Brushed Silver/Black, Blue/Silver Tan on navy is a classic pairing; Blue/Silver is a clean tone-on-tone.
Green or loden Saddle Tan/Black, Light Brown/Black, Rustic/Gold Earth tones keep an outdoor look.
Camo Solid patches: Saddle Tan/Black, Light Brown/Black, Black/Gold A busy pattern needs a calm patch so the logo reads.
Red, orange or bright colors Black/Silver, Black/Gold, Dark Brown/Black A dark patch anchors a loud cap.

Prefer real leather?

Full-grain leather engraves darker than its surface instead of revealing a second color, so the look is tone-on-tone and natural. Our full-grain leather blanks come in 9 colors, and our leather panels now include Merlot, Olive Green, Cocoa Brown and Sea Grass alongside Bison Brown, Natural and Hazel.

Tips before you order a batch

  • Hold a swatch against the actual cap. Screens shift colors; a sample doesn't. Our samples are the cheapest way to check.
  • Engrave a test. The revealed color looks different at full engraving depth than on the edge of a sheet.
  • Look at it from a few feet away. Contrast that looks strong up close can fade at a distance.
  • Think about the whole line. Two or three patch colors that work across all your cap colors keep inventory simple.

FAQ

What patch color goes with every cap?

Browns like Light Brown/Black and Saddle Tan/Black work on most cap colors, which is why they're a safe first color for a new hat line.

What engraving color is easiest to read?

Black engraving on a light patch, or gold and silver on a dark patch, gives the strongest contrast.

Can I put a camo patch on a camo hat?

You can, but the logo will be hard to see. A solid patch on a camo cap, or a camo patch on a solid cap, reads much better.

Do different colors need different press settings?

Press settings depend on the material and the press, not the color. Use the hat patch heat press chart. Laser settings can vary by color, so run a test grid on each new one.
